Ms. Edyza Deynes Named Principal for 2021-2022

The School Board of the Metropolitan School District of Lawrence Township has unanimously approved the appointment of Ms. Edyza Deynes to the position of Principal of Sunnyside Elementary School for the 2021-2022 school year. Ms. Deynes will transition to this new position at the conclusion of the 2020-2021 academic year. She currently serves as the Principal of the Early Learning Center at Brook Park, a role she has held since January of 2020. Before that time, she served as Assistant Principal at Sunnyside Elementary School and Assistant Principal at Mary Castle Elementary School. Her teaching experience was in English as a New Language and in Kindergarten at Lawrence Central High School, Sunnyside Elementary School, and the Early Learning Center at Mary Castle.
According to Superintendent, Dr. Shawn A. Smith, “Ms. Deynes’ knowledge of the Sunnyside community makes her the ideal educator to continue leading the school down a path of successful teaching and learning. I am confident both her leadership and in her unwavering commitment to the families and students of our district.”
A native or Puerto Rico, Ms. Deynes attended Ball State University where she earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education with a concentration in English as a new Language and a Spanish Minor. She holds a Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership from the IUPUI Urban Principal Program.
Regarding her new position, Deynes shares, “I am honored to return to Sunnyside to support a strong school community of bright students, dedicated staff, and engaged families.”
Ms. Deynes and her husband, Mr. Sean Hise, are district residents and parents. They have three children, Maya (8), Michael (6) and Maverick (2).
